City announces upgrades to Tacoma Dome

Nov 30, 2016 - 04:17 PM

The City of Tacoma has announced plans to renovate the Tacoma Dome, with $21.3 million in the 2016-17 biennial budget allocated toward upgrading the iconic facility.

According to a statement from the City, the Dome, which already seats 23,000 at its largest configuration, will be revitalized with new telescopic seating, exterior beautification, renovated restrooms, modernization of backstage areas, and upgrades to loading docks and security systems.

The new seating system to be installed will eliminate the portable seating from the Dome’s parking lots — an often familiar sight from nearby I-5. Fire alarm and security advancements are also set to be installed, further augmenting safety measures put in place earlier this year.

“Investing in the infrastructure and long-term future of the Tacoma Dome is vital to the continued growth of arts and tourism in the region,” said Mayor Marilyn Strickland. “The sustained economic vitality of the Dome will continue to advance Tacoma’s reputation as a destination.”

“The City of Tacoma is committed to excellence and high standards in service,” added City Manager T.C. Broadnax. “The revitalization of this legendary venue will not only impact the skyline but also boost community pride.”

Renovations are slated to kick off in the summer of 2017, with the new seating to be installed during the following summer. All renovations are projected to be completed by fall of 2018.
