Thurston ‘Boss of Year’ honorees named
Jim Larson, president and CEO of Olympia’s Morningside Services for more than a quarter-century, is one of three name Boss of the Year honorees. A passionate leader for a non-profit that finds jobs for persons with disabilities, Larson is being honored in the non-profit category.
Dave Nickerson, general manager of Tumwater Valley Golf Club for the past four-plus years, is 2017 Boss of the Year in the small business category. Considered one of the finer courses in the region, Nickerson and his team keep it in top shape and busy with league play, tournaments and special activities.
In the large employer competition, Heather Burgess, co-founder of Phillips Burgess PLLC, a real estate, land use and environmental law firm in Olympia and Tacoma, is named 2017 Boss of the Year. Before entering private practice as a lawyer, Burgess served 13 years in the U.S. Army, including six years as a Judge Advocate. She retired from Washington Army National Guard in 2016.
Boss of the Year is a recognition program sponsored by Express Employment Professionals and conducted by Thurston County Chamber of Commerce. More than 40 bosses nominated for this year’s consideration were interviewed by business school students at Saint Martin’s University, prior to selections being made by a Chamber committee.
The honorees will be featured at a Chamber Forum luncheon on Wednesday, Dec. 13.
