‘Triple bottom-line’ brings $20k prize

A family-owned restaurant featuring “Real Food for Real People” has won a $20,000 prize in the fourth annual “edg3 FUND” small business competition sponsored by Kitsap Bank.
Home Made Cafe was established when the owners’ 10-year-old daughter was diagnosed with an allergy to high fructose corn syrup. That ailment caused great difficulty for the family wanting to go out to eat, so co-owner Suanne Martin Smith decided to open an eatery where families with food allergies could enjoy a meal made from scratch with quality (non-processed) ingredients.
“We are extremely pleased that Home Made Cafe has won the $20,000 prize,” says Tony George, Kitsap Bank’s president and chief operating officer. “They are focused on making a difference in the community in a socially, economically, and environmentally responsible way.”
Competing businesses in the “edg3 FUND” program were rated based on their commitment to the triple bottom line – entrepreneurs dedicated to growing their community economically, socially, and environmentally.
The award-winning restaurant in Port Orchard donates to the local food bank and participates in Lunch camp, which provides free lunches for kids in need in the community.
Kitsap Bank also awarded $5,000 in a community award to Cascade Hygiene in Bremerton, which provides dental services to anyone with limited access to care through a mobile dental hygience service.
