SSA takes over stevedoring for Matson in Tacoma
SSA Marine has taken over stevedoring and terminal services for Matson at Port of Tacoma a few months early, the Northwest Seaport Alliance has announced.
The 10-year lease for the West Sitcum Terminal, authorized by managing members of the NWSA last week, became effective immediately. The Tacoma terminal, operated by APM Terminals since 1985, was the only Matson terminal on the West Coast not already managed by Seattle-based SSA Marine.
The move to SSA had been known for a while; Matson announced in April that it would transition to SSA Marine’ services when APM Terminals’ lease ended Dec. 31. However, APM Terminals gave notice that it would end its lease early on Sept. 30.
"APMT has served us well. It just makes more sense to work with our strategic partner at Tacoma as we do at all of our other terminals on the West Coast," said Ron Forest, senior vice president of operations for Matson, when the move was first announced in April. "We expect a seamless transition and no change in our Tacoma operations from a customer standpoint."
Matson provides two weekly services to Alaska from the West Sitcum Terminal, where operations support some 200 jobs.
