Former WaMu employees eligible for assistance

Washington Mutual employees who are receiving layoff notices from JPMorgan Chase are also receiving information from state and local layoff-response officials about unemployment benefits and job-search assistance that are available to them.

Leaders from the state Employment Security Department's mass-layoff unit and the Seattle-King County rapid-response team met recently with JPMorgan officials to plan informational sessions that will supplement the company's own severance and employee-assistance efforts.

A series of one-hour sessions will be held on Dec. 12 for Washington Mutual employees who are being laid off in the next few months.

TRCVB event highlighted local efforts

The Tacoma Regional Convention and Visitor Bureau elected new board members and announced the winners of its first STARS of tourism competition this morning at its annual meeting.

First-year Executive Director Tammy Blount said 2008 has been a truly exciting year and the bureau is well positioned to make an even bigger impact in the years to come.

The STARS of tourism winners included:

  • The Community Unity award went to Jon Graef of Tacoma-Pierce County Sports Commission.
  • The Tourism Professional of the Year award went to Jeff Bowe of Hotel Murano.
  • The Tourism Visionary award went to outgoing Pierce County Executive John Ladenburg for his work to create Chambers Bay.

Green River Bridge closed for at least 6 months

The Washington State Department of Transportation closed last night the 80-year-old State Route 169 Green River Bridge for at least six months due to concerns for public safety. The Kummer Bridge is vital to the communities of Black Diamond and Enumclaw. It carries an estimated 9000 trips each day including emergency services and law enforcement.

"I can't emphasize enough that this closure is about safety," said Paula Hammond, Secretary of Transportation. "We will do what is necessary to keep the public safe and preserve the bridge."

TCC forum questions employers use of networking sites

Tacoma Community College's Center for Ethical Development kicked off  a forum series today that examines business issues to promote ethical decisions in the workplace with a program titled "Internet Privacy? Ethical Implications of Social Networking."

Connecting with people on the Internet has exploded through social and business networking sites in the past few years. This event focused on the ethical implications involved in posting information, altering or creating identities or examining social networking information to influence life decisions like hiring or student screening for college admission.

Trufant Foundation aims to tackle dropout issues

Seattle Seahawks cornerback Marcus Trufant and his Trufant Family Foundation, which is located in Tacoma, have announced a partnership with CHOICES Education Group for a second year to help keep teens in school. The two nonprofit organizations will collaborate once again on an NFL season-long campaign to raise public awareness and funding to support CHOICES and the Trufant Family Foundation.

Regence employees donate despite economy

The weakening economy did not keep Regence BlueShield employees from donating more of their own money this year to nonprofits. Regence employees pledged more than $1.6 million, which will grow to $2.47 million with the company match system. Last year, employees donated about $1 million.

Governor touts export market success

Gov. Chris Gregoire today pledged to continue her efforts to strengthen Washington's export market, while speaking at the 4th Annual World Trade Center-Tacoma International Trade luncheon.

Since 2004, the state's exports have doubled, reaching a record $67 billion last year. Washington now exports more on a per-capita basis than any other state. One in three Washington jobs is directly or indirectly related to international trade.

Economy hurts Puget Sound office market

The Puget Sound office market has begun to feel the effects of the declining national economy, with vacancy increasing 60 basis points to 10.5 percent and average asking rates declining across the region, according to a report released by Grubb & Ellis Company.

Local architects won city hall competition

The Olympia City Council last night chose Belay Architecture of Tacoma and Hoffman Construction Company of Seattle to design and build the new city hall building. The building is estimated to cost $35.65 million.

Unemployment rate down in September

The unemployment rate in Washington took a dip in September to 5.8 percent, down from 6 percent in August. Some 186,810 people (not seasonally adjusted) were unemployed and seeking work in Washington last month.

Year over year, Washington has added 28,100 nonfarm jobs from September 2007 to September 2008, a growth rate of 1 percent.  By comparison, the number of jobs nationwide declined by 0.7 percent in the same time period, as it did for the month of September in Washington state.

Biking hazards highlighted by riding event

In an effort to improve Tacoma's bike infrastructure and general mindset, the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber and City of Tacoma mobility staff invited elected officials and city workers on a bicycle commute.
 
About 25 people, including four city council members, met at three different locations, biked into work and then gathered up in downtown Tacoma to discuss their experiences of trying to bike around Tacoma.

Kent salon fights to keep fish pedicures

The state Deparment of Licensing banned fish pedicures from all licensed salons at the beginning of the month. One Kent Station business, Peridot Nail Salon, was hand-delivered a notice of the ban, since it was the only one known to offer the service. The salon's owner, Tuyet "Tweety" Bui, mailed in a hearing request to the department because she said the state needs to take a closer look at the pedicure practice before banning it completely.

Saint Martins breaks ground for rec center

Saint Martin's University broke ground today for its new student recreation and fitness center.

The university selected the team of Helix Design and Mountain Construction to design and build the new 39,000-square-foot center, which is supposed to provide students with space and equipment to recreate and maintain their physical fitness. Construction on the building is supposed to start immediately and is expected to be completed by next fall.

"This recreation and fitness facility is part of Saint Martin's strategic plan to increase the number of its main campus students," said David Spangler, interim president.

Natural gas rates increase

As the result of actions by state regulators today, electricity rates for Pacific Power and Puget Sound residential customers will increase.

Pacific Power's customers will see an increase of about $4 a month, so the typical residential customer will see his or her monthly bill increase next month to $89. Electricity bills for Puget Sound Energy residential customers will drop by 3 percent, while natural gas bills will rise by 5 percent.

Transportation campaign kicks off

In a push to get more people working and living in downtown Tacoma out of their cars, the City of Tacoma, Pierce Transit, Pierce County and the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber have united for a campaign aimed at reducing traffic congestion in Tacoma.

The "Downtown: On the go! Reinvent your commute!" campaign is aimed at reducing traffic congestion in Tacoma by getting people onto buses and vanpools, out walking and riding bikes, and sharing rides. The kick-off event was held today at Tollefson Plaza.

State's minimum wage will increase

Washington's minimum wage will jump 48 cents to $8.55 an hour beginning Jan. 1, an increase required by a voter initiative passed 10 years ago that set the minimum wage to the Consumer Price Index for the greater Seattle area.

Ground in Lacey was broken and blessed yesterday in preparation for the Pope John Paul II High School, which is scheduled to open in September of 2009.

Hotels see vacancies, raise prices

Washington's statewide occupancy in hotels decreased by 1.1 percent, while the statewide average daily room rate was $143.45, up 4.4 percent from a year ago. Tacoma and Pierce County hotels were worse than the state average in occupancy and higher in price increases.

UW Tacoma opens new hall

The $12 million William W. Philip Hall opened today with an offical ribbon cutting at 10 a.m. The 21,000-square-foot building can accommodate up to 500 people. It will be used for campus events and a space for students to study and hang out between classes.

The largest room in the building, the James A. Milgard Family Assembly Room, will be used for lectures, concerts, banquets, student activities and community events.

Philip Hall is the only modern structure among a row of historic buildings facing Pacific Avenue that make up the main entry to the university. The building's contractor was John Korsmo Construction, Inc. of Tacoma and Thomas Hacker Architects designed the building, located at 1914 Pacific Ave.

Sumner's first major lodging facility is set to open Sept. 29. The 112-room Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites will be located in the Puyallup Valley just off Highway 167. The grand opening has not yet been set, but will be sometime in early November.

Restaurant raises dough for children

Toscanos Café and Wine Bar in Puyallup celebrated its fourth anniversary Sept. 7 by raising a record $102,000 to benefit charity care at the Good Samaritan Children's Therapy Unit. This donation nearly doubles last year's benefit proceeds, and brings Toscanos' all-time giving to more than $200,000.

PPI declined in August

The Producer Price Index for Finished Goods declined 0.9 percent in August, seasonally adjusted, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today.

This decrease followed advances of 1.2 percent in July and 1.8 percent in June. At the earlier stages of processing, prices received by manufacturers of intermediate goods fell 1 percent in August after rising 2.7 percent in the prior month, and the crude goods index dropped 11.9 percent following a 4.2 percent increase in July.

Weak retail sales in August

Retailers' summer started off with a bang but ended with a whimper.

August retail sales released today by the U.S. Commerce Department show total retail sales decreased 0.3 percent, seasonally adjusted from the previous month and decreased 0.4 percent unadjusted year-over-year.

Construction prices remain unchanged

Construction input prices in August went unchanged from July, according to the Sept. 12 Producer Price Index report by the U.S. Labor Department. Although there was a slight decrease since July, the year-over-year increase since last August is still remarkably high at 12.7 percent.

Joint Base discussion encouraged

Representatives from McChord Airforce Base and Fort Lewis met with the Military Affairs Committee of the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber in Tacoma this morning to discuss plans for Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Plans have not been finalized and community input is welcomed as the opening January 2010 date approaches.

Capt. Suzanne Ovel and Joseph Jimenez, Joint Base public affairs representative, said plans are still being finalized, but the two government entities' contracting offices are looking to consolidate.

Boeing machinists on strike

After two more days of negotiation, Boeing and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers were unable to reach an agreement Friday on a new collective bargaining agreement, covering nearly 27,000 employees mainly in Washington, Oregon and Kansas. Boeing machinists' began to strike at midnight Friday.

SPEEA: Boeing risks 787 delays

The Boeing Co.'s public acknowledgement that outsourcing is causing problems with the 787 program is lip service until action is taken to correct problems created by a global network of suppliers and inexperienced workers, according to the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace, IFPTE Local 2001.

O'Brien closes on purchase

O'Brien Auto Group, the largest auto dealer in Washington, has announced the completion of its purchase of DeLon Auto Center in Salem, Ore. The purchase includes all four DeLon dealerships and represents  O'Brien's formal entry into the Oregon market.

McChord supplies New Orleans

A C-17 Globemaster III from McChord Air Force Base provided rapid deployment of a four-man team and 15,500 pounds of cargo from the 615th Contingency Response Wing at Travis AFB, Calif., into New Orleans International Airport in preparation for Hurricane Gustav Saturday morning.
