Private nonresidential construction spending higher in July

Despite a downturn in overall construction activity, private nonresidential construction spending was up 0.8 percent in July – the first increase since March 2009, according to today's report by the U.S. Census Bureau.

However, on year-over-year basis, private nonresidential construction spending is down 23.7 percent.

Reseller permits lead to increased taxable building supply sales

An estimated $24.4 million in additional state and local sales taxes have been reported by the construction industry since Washington shifted to a more tightly controlled reseller permit system in January.

A higher percentage of businesses are paying sales tax on construction materials since the state eliminated the self-issued resale certificates that allowed a business to not pay sales tax if it declared the tax would be collected when the product was resold to the final consumer.

Construction materials prices fall slightly

Although prices for construction materials and supplies were 4.5 percent higher in July 2010 than July 2009, prices inched 0.2 percent lower on a monthly basis, according to the Aug. 17 producer price index report by the U.S. Labor Department.

Softwood lumber prices continued to decline, falling 3.3 percent for the month, although they are still up 10.1 percent from July 2009. Iron and steel prices were down 2.3 percent in July, but still 26 percent higher year-over-year.

Newton has more than 15 years of marketing, fund development and management experience, in both corporate and non-profit sectors. She most recently worked for Mason County Literacy in Shelton.

Construction sector continues to shed jobs

Despite being in the height of the construction season, the nation's nonresidential building construction sector shed 1,800 jobs in July, according to the the U.S. Department of Labor.

Since July 2009, 38,700 nonresidential construction jobs, or 5.4 percent, have been lost. Nonresidential construction employment now stands at 680,100.

His notable projects include the Washington State Department of Ecology Headquarters in Lacey and Lake Washington High School for Lake Washington School District.

Private nonresidential construction spending continues to fall

For the 15th consecutive month, private nonresidential construction spending has fallen, slipping 0.5 percent in June, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

From June 2009, private nonresidential construction spending is down 24.1 percent. In contrast, total nonresidential construction spending – which includes both private and public construction – was up 0.4 percent from May and now stands at $567.5 billion in June, but is 15.2 percent lower from the same time last year.

Rushforth Construction recognized for safety

Rushforth Construction has received a 2010 STEP Platinum award for safety from the western Washington chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors Inc.

The Safety Training and Evaluation Process program was designed to give contractors a method to develop and measure safety programs. To earn a platinum-level award companies must have a recordable incident rate of 3.3 or lower, which represents the number of injuries and illnesses per 200,000 hours worked.

Mason PUD 3 sells bonds for capital projects, refinancing of debt

Mason County PUD No. 3 has sold $59.8 million in bonds to pay for construction of its Johns Prairie operations center, a number of important electrical system improvements and refinancing of a portion of existing debt at lower interest rates.

Ecology starts review of Des Moines shoreline program update

The Washington Department of Ecology is seeking public comment about the City of Des Moines' updated Shoreline Master Program that will increase the protection and restoration of Puget Sound shorelines.

The program guides construction and development in the City of Des Moines along about five miles of marine shoreline. It combines local plans for development and preservation with new development ordinances and related permitting requirements.

Puyallup Wal-Mart remodeling, hiring

The Puyallup Wal-Mart has begun an extensive renovation and plans to hire about 100 workers to help with the remodel.

The store's new design will feature wider aisles, low-profile shelving, bright interior paint scheme and lighting and easy-to-read signage.

Construction backlog indicator expands

Associated Builders and Contractors' latest Construction Backlog Indicator increased to seven months during May – a 27 percent increase from January.

"Construction backlog continues to edge higher and has generally been on an upward trajectory since late 2009," said ABC Chief Economist Anirban Basu. "But it's not clear whether this level can be sustained. While this latest data indicate a broader improvement in nonresidential construction activity, there may be several alarming reasons for the increase including the financial failure of competitor firms leaving more opportunities for surviving companies, or contractors accepting projects with lower profit margins."

Cost of construction materials, supplies dips

Following three months of increases, the price of construction materials and supplies fell 0.9 percent during June , according to the U.S. Labor Department. However, prices are up 0.8 percent for the second quarter of the year and are 4.2 percent higher from June 2009.

Most commodities tracked by Associated Builders and Contractors Inc. posted decreases for the month.

Colliers moving brokerage services out of Tacoma

Colliers International has moved its Tacoma brokerage services to offices in Seattle and Bellevue. Property management services will remain unaffected.
 
Peter Truex will continue to serve as senior managing director and managing director Bret Jordan, who is based in the Bellevue office, will also serve as co-director of the regional operation.

Kent approves transportation impact fees

The Kent City Council has approved the collection of transportation impact fees to help pay for road projects to accommodate new growth.
 
Transportation impact fees are paid by developers and expanding businesses to help cover the cost of road improvements that increase traffic capacity. Money from the fees is tied directly to the size and type of the development and the anticipated increase in traffic associated with the project.

Habitat For Humanity of Mason County completes first Built Green home

Habitat For Humanity will receive a level 5 Built Green Certificate on Thursday from Olympia Master Builders for its home at 111 E. Cedar Grove Lane, Shelton.

The certification is for the first of two homes Habitat For Humanity of Mason County is committed to building Built Green in Mason County this year.
