Commercial construction jobs grow, for now

Going against the tide of the nation's rising unemployment rate, the nonresidential construction sector gained 2,900 jobs in August, according to the U.S. Labor Department. But that won't likely last.

Accounting, IT hiring to be flat

A net 1 percent of chief financial officers in the Puget Sound expect to add accounting and finance staff during the fourth quarter of 2008, according to a recent Robert Half International Financial Hiring Index. While 7 percent of executives surveyed plan to add staff during the quarter, another 6 percent anticipate reductions in personnel. The majority of respondents, 85 percent, foresee no change in hiring.

Commercial construction increases

"Nonresidential construction spending continued growing in July, despite the weak economy and housing slump," said Ken Simonson, Chief Economist for The Associated General Contractors of America, following the release of construction spending data from the Census Bureau. "But Congress must act promptly to avert layoffs in power and highway construction."

Blog Watch: Farm team

Tacomamama.com has a collection of items about the Richter Farm in Fife, which is set to be replaced by an American Fast Freight facility. The farm has a few more weeks before the harvest is ready, so leveling the land for development could mean lost revenue for the farm. It's a complicated story that became more so after the company posted a press release on its Web site that it had reached an agreement with the farmer. The post was removed hours later since negotiations are still underway.

Chehalis bridge replacement to begin

The Washington State Department of Transportation announced a project to build a new bridge over the South Fork of the Chehalis River on State Route 6 will begin Aug. 25. The contract was awarded to Scarsella Bros., Inc. of Seattle, which submitted a bid of $7,854,340.30. This project is funded through the 2005 Transportation Partnership Account.

Lacey's growing Hawks Prairie commercial center is set to be the site of the second Best Western in Thurston County. The Tumwater location opened in 1993. A downtown Olympia Best Western changed its affiliation to Clarion Hotel two years ago.

Oil spill clean up winding down

Response by emergency teams helped contain what remained of 100 gallons of diesel that spilled into the Foss Waterway yesterday morning. By the time responders arrived, most of the spilled diesel had already dissipated and could not be recovered, according to reports by the state Department of Ecology. As a precaution, responders laid out 800 feet of containment boom and placed absorbent materials in the water to capture any pockets of diesel. Ecology’s responders say the sheen will continue to break down today but may still be visible.

Inflation on the rise

The Producer Price Index for Finished Goods jumped 1.2 percent in July, seasonally adjusted, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. This increase followed a 1.8 percent jump in June and a 1.4 percent rise in May. At the earlier stages of processing, prices received by manufacturers of intermediate goods moved up 2.7 percent in July compared to a 2.1 percent gain in the prior month. The index for crude materials for further processing climbed 4.2 percent subsequent to a 3.7 percent increase in June.

Historic Tacoma works to salvage materials from demolition

Historic Tacoma coordinated an effort  last week to salvage parts of a 1916 bungalow slated for demolition on Tacoma's Hilltop. The block is being cleared to make way for a surface parking lot near Tacoma's St. Joseph Hospital. The initial work consisted of removing interior doors, trim, cabinets and lighting hardware.

Blog Watch: just bagging it

The Association of Washington Business has a note about TNT columnist Peter Callaghan's thoughts on Seattle's pending rule to add a 20-cent charge on all paper and plastic bags as a way to aid the environment and cut down on litter by lowering the number of disposable bags shoppers carry. The trouble with that plan is that those bags come from wood in Washington. Fewer bags means fewer trees need to be harvested and the timber industry takes another hit.

Narrows airport purchase hits a snag

Pierce County officials are planning to sell more than 60 acres of land outside of Graham to  raise enough money to purchase the Tacoma Narrows Airport in Gig Harbor from the City of Tacoma.

The county operates a maintenance facility along Highway 7 that it hopes would sell for $17.5 million. The Pierce County Council is set to formally approve the sale this afternoon.
Tacoma-based Managing Green is set to buy the Elks Plain site, which is zoned for mixed use.

The trouble is that residents near the property are mounting a campaign to halt the sale. More than 100 people have signed a petition in opposition to the sale.

Revenue collections still weakening

General Fund tax payments to state coffers continued to weaken during the July-to-August collection period. Receipts for the month were $59.9 million, or 5.0 percent, lower than expected. All  revenue categories except for estate taxes, DOL revenues and "other" came in below their forecasts.

Weyerhaeuser to ax 1,500 jobs

Federal Way timber giant Weyerhaeuser has announced that it will cut some 1,500 jobs from its global payroll, with up to 1,000 at its corporate headquarters, as a way to combat the downturn in the forest industries market. The reductions are forecast to be complete by the end of 2009 and would significantly reduce the employment base at the Federal Way location, which currently has 2,500 jobs.

The company posted a $96 million loss this quarter. The loss was 45 cents per share, almost double analyst predictions.

Thurston tanker spill fined $7,000

The Washington Department of Ecology this week penalized Hoquiam-based Pettit Oil $7,000 for a June 2007 trailer truck crash that caused some 2,0000 gallons of diesel fuel and gasoline to spill and ignite along Highway 8, near the Thurston and Grays Harbor county border.

GDP is up but lagging, report finds

Real nonresidential fixed investment, which includes the purchase of nonresidential structures for investments or commercial uses, increased 2.3 percent during the second quarter of 2008 compared with a 2.4 percent increase in the previous quarter, according to data released today by the U.S. Commerce Department on the nation's Gross Domestic Product.

The Olympia Planning Commission voted 7-3 last night to recommend raising building-height limits on approximately four acres of land between Capitol Lake and Budd Inlet, bringing developer Triway Enterprises one step closer to building several residential and retail complexes on the site. The danger of a roof collapse has led to restrictions on the motel license of Lakewood's Biltmore Motel. The Department of Health has instructed the motel owner not to allow guests to stay in about 10 rooms where the roof is unstable.

Confidence holds steady, report finds

The Conference Board Measure of CEO Confidence, which declined in the first quarter of 2008, inched up a point to 39 in the second quarter. Although confidence is up, it is still pessimistic since a reading of less than 50 points reflects negative outlook of conditions. The last time the measure fell below 38 was in the final quarter of 2000, when it was at 31.

The US small business economy appears to be making more extensive use of independent contractors instead of adding workers to their payrolls. The SurePayroll Contractor Index ended June at 3.54 percent, up from 3.52 percent in May and 3.50 percent in April. At the end of 2007, the Contractor Index stood at 3.45 percent.

Construction employment continues decline

The nation's nonresidential construction sector lost 5,600 jobs in June, on a seasonally-adjusted basis, reports the U.S. Labor Department.

The loss of jobs in June was less than the job losses recorded in May, which was revised upward to 7,400 in the most recent employment report. The six-month job losses for nonresidential construction now stands at 29,100 and a 12-month net loss of 43,900 jobs since June 2007.

Workers’ comp dividend on the way

The Department of Labor & Industries will begin mailing dividend checks this week to 100,000 employers as the final step of a process to return excess funds from the state's workers' compensation system. Another 28,000 employers will receive credit toward their next workers' compensation premiums. The remaining 11,000 employers will have their dividends applied to premiums already owed or to other debts.

Workers currently receiving Washington workers' compensation wage-replacement or pension benefits will receive a 5.018 percent cost-of-living increase effective Tuesday, July 1. State law requires that benefits be recalculated each year to reflect the change in the state's average wage from the previous calendar year.

Weyerhaeuser Co. declared a dividend of 60 cents per share payable Aug. 25 to shareholders of record at the close of business Aug. 1.

Tacoma man falsifies water reports

State health officials have suspended certification of a backflow assembly tester who falsified inspection reports on a drinking water system while working for a client in Tacoma. The suspension will last for six months.

State lists charges against Countrywide

Gov. Chris Gregoire has announced plans by the state to fine Countrywide Home Loans $1 million for discriminatory lending. In addition, the company will be required to pay more than $5 million in back assessments the company failed to pay. Gregoire also announced the state is seeking to revoke Countrywide's license to do business in Washington for its alleged illegal activity.
