Chambers Bay to host U.S. Open

The United States Golf Association announced today at its annual meeting in Houston that the U.S. Open will be held at Pierce County's Chambers Bay golf course in 2015. It will be the first Open held in the Pacific Northwest. The USGA also awarded the 2010 U.S. Amateur to Chambers Bay.

The last time the U.S. Open went to such a new golf course was in 1970 at Hazeltine, a private club in Minnesota that was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and opened for play in 1962.

Pierce County invested $21 million in the public course, which opened last June. Pierce County Executive John Ladenburg expects the economic impact of today's announcement to be at least $100 million.
