A C-17 Globemaster III from McChord Air Force Base provided rapid deployment of a four-man team and 15,500 pounds of cargo from the 615th Contingency Response Wing at Travis AFB, Calif., into New Orleans International Airport in preparation for Hurricane Gustav Saturday morning.

Free drug cards are now available

The Washington Drug Card program is now available to all Washington residents.

The program, which is free to all Washingtonians and provides savings of up to 75 percent on prescription drugs, can now be accessed by visiting any Safeway pharmacy location in Washington. Safeway has been named the preferred pharmacy for the statewide program, while the benefits are accepted at more than 50,000 national and regional pharmacies around the country.

'New day' dawns at CVB

Tacoma Regional Convention & Visitor Bureau formally unveiled its vision for the future of tourism in Pierce County and the region at a breakfast program this morning at the Landmark Convention Center.

"Our new plan is designed to firmly position the TRCVB as the recognized regional leader in effective destination marketing," said Executive Director Tammy Blount. "We are focused on being the catalyst in community and tourism activities, developing local and state partnerships, delivering effective marketing programs and facilitating product development enhancements."

Women of Influence announced

The Business Examiner's 2008 Women of Influence honorees have been selected.

Women in the South Sound are first nominated and then asked to complete an extensive questionnaire about their business and community activities. Some 40 women qualified for consideration this year.

Judges review the materials and select the class of honorees. This year's class includes Dawn Lucien, a WOI alumnae from 2004 who was selected for the Lifetime Achievement award, while Rising Star awards for up-and-coming women business leaders go to Cecelia Loveless, director for Resource Development at Clover Park Technical College and Vicky Mohler for her work with Support America's Armed Forces.

Other honorees are: Cyndi Wikstrom, general manager of Tacoma's Click! Network; Kim Farnes, executive director of Communities in Schools of Orting, Rita Hutcheson fire chief of South East Thurston Fire and EMS; and Jill Kenly, director of Fund Development for Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity.

The American Heart Association has announced that Scott Seelye, vice president of HHJ Construction in Fife, has volunteered to serve as chair for the 2008 Pierce County Start! Heart Walk set for Saturday, Oct. 4 in downtown Tacoma.  Furthermore, entrepreneurs Carole Holder and Pat Nagle, co-owners of Sound n' Shore Properties, Harmon Brewery & Restaurant, and The Hub, have committed to serve as chairs for the Heart Walk in 2009. The Heart Walk is the biggest community event for the American Heart Association in Pierce County and this year Seelye has committed to providing leadership to increase corporate participation and help the event reach its fundraising goal of $550,000.  HHJ Construction, Inc. is supporting the walk with sponsorship and a company team of employees and their families. Funds raised through the Heart Walk allow the AHA to continue providing medical research grants in the state of Washington, which currently total $5.6 million, and to fund initiatives that protect the health of Pierce County residents from cardiovascular diseases, the leading killer in Washington and in the US. AHA programs include health education, improving quality of care in hospitals, CPR/AED training, cultural health initiatives, and advocacy.

A new vision has been created for a 36-acre park site on South Hill that in earlier years  was the home of one of America's most popular outdoor religious dramas.  The site - now known as Meridian Habitat Park and Community Center - is to become home for a Boys & Girls Club HOPE Center pending a successful fund-raising effort.

Greg Rolsma of University Place was crowned Pierce County's Biggest Winner after completing the Roman Meal Sound to Narrows 5K run. Rolsma lost 46 pounds, or 15.8 percent of his body weight, while competing for the last 14 weeks with 19 other contestants from across Pierce County. For his achievement, Rolsma won an 18-month membership to Pierce County's YMCA, three sessions with a registered dietician, and a two-night stay at the Sleeping Lady Lodge in Leavenworth. Rolsma, who works for Frontier Bank, frequently dines out and entertains and the advice from the MultiCare dietician helped him make positive choices in "real life." His wife took regular walks with him and helps with food preparation and choices at home. Coming in a close second, Scott Andrews of Tacoma lost 50.6 pounds, or  15.5 percent of his body weight. Heather Nighbor of Gig Harbor was the top female winner, losing 23.8 pounds, or 13.1 percent of her body weight. Nighbor is just 20 pounds away from her goal weight. MultiCare Center For Healthy Living, in partnership with Pierce County Gets Fit, began Pierce County's Biggest Winner program in 2007. Four teams of five Pierce County contestants were chosen to compete to lose weight over a 14-week period. Each team represents four different regions in Pierce County and includes a community leader and a business representative from their region.

The Washington Manufacturing Symposium will be held on the last day of a two-day event on June 2 and 3, to help local manufactures continue to compete in the global market place. Programs will address everything from business development to supply chain improvements and all things critical to smaller and mid-sized companies in the manufacturing community. Flood survey results to be presented

The findings of a survey following the December 2007 floods in Southwest Washington will be presented at 1 p.m. May 14 during the Centralia Business and Professional talk at Centralia College, Washington Hall in room 103. Information will be shared with local and state officials. The findings will be used to formulate better strategies for supporting business recovery from floods and other disasters in Washington.

Goodwill names top employers

Annual awards breakfast held

Harris-Rebar, a construction supply firm located on Tacoma Tideflats, was named Small Employer of the Year this morning by Tacoma Goodwill Industries. The honor is recognition for hiring five young adults from the agency's Youth Builds and other training programs, and it came during the agency's annual awards breakfast event at Greater Tacoma Convention & Trade Center.

The Army & Air Force Exchange Service, which operates retail stores and services on Fort Lewis and McChord Air Force Base to benefit the military's morale and welfare funds, was named Large Employer of the Year. A self-supporting operation with no federal tax support, AAFES has a long history of willingness to provide flexibility in hirings and workplace accommodations that benefit employment opportunities for people with disabilites.

Tahoma Veterinary Hospital of Spanaway has again received accreditation following a comprehensive evaluation by the American Animal Hospital Association. The evaluation includes a quality assessment review of the hospital's facility, medical equipment, practice methods and pet health care management. Only 15 percent of all small animal veterinary practices in the U.S. have achieved accreditation by the American Animal Hospital Association. In order to maintain accredited status, Tahoma Veterinary Hospital must continue to be evaluated regularly by the association's consultants.

Local homes receives free upgrades

Volunteers from Rebuilding Together South Sound, the local affiliate of the nation's largest nonprofit organization working to preserve affordable homeownership, and the Western States Petroleum Association gathered Saturday to help improve a local homeowner's quality of life, as well as reduce her energy use and save money as part of an energy-efficient rebuild of her home.

Hundreds of volunteer contractors and builders will be donating their time tomorrow for  Rebuilding Together South Sound, part of a national effort to provide free home repairs and modifications for low-income Americans  – the elderly, disabled, military veterans and families in need. Rebuilding Together South Sound was founded in October of 2001 in response to the growing need for help in the Pierce County area. Its mission is to serve our community by repairing the homes of low-income homeowners – particularly the elderly, disabled and families with children. The effort is supported by Master Builders Association of Pierce County.

Heels replace workboots for fundraiser

More than 100 construction workers and office professionals turned in their work boots or loafers for high heels and flats to walk through downtown Tacoma today. The fundraiser "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" was a way to raise money for the Sexual Assault Center of Pierce County

Multicare funding drive surges forward

MultiCare Health System is off to a healthy start as it endeavors to raise $25 million to expand and build new Emergency Departments for Tacoma General Hospital and Mary Bridge Children's Hospital. The current fundraising campaign would raise about a third of what will be needed to build the new departments, which officials hope will take some pressure off of existing facilities and make room for growth. So far, donation commitments total $16 million.

Don Lloyd, Development Director for Rushforth Construction in Tacoma, has been named by the Rotary Club of Tacoma #8 as Rotarian of the Year. Lloyd was cited for his commitment to the club through service on the board and sponsorship of 32 members, and for his community involvement. Lloyd is past president of the Tacoma club, has chaired the Heart Walk and is presently chair of the Tacoma Lutheran Home Board of Trustees.

Shauna Lunde has joined the Tacoma Regional Convention & Visitor Bureau as sales manager, effective April 1. She is responsible for developing convention, tour operator and other group business for the bureau. Lunde comes to the bureau from the Olympia-Lacey-Tumwater Visitor & Convention Bureau, where she handled marketing development, membership and group/conference sales. She is a graduate of Western Washington University.

State funding for center hits $1.2 mil

Flood protection bill ready to be signed

A $50-million flood protection package for the Chehalis River basin won unanimous approval in the state Senate and is headed to the governor's desk where it is expected to be signed into law. The money would be used to implement flood-control measures in Lewis, Thurston and Grays Harbor counties.

Judy Hendrickson, a Centralia native now living in Cary, N.C., has donated a piece of property located on Seminary Hill Road in Centralia to the City of Centralia. The land, about one-third of an acre in size, will be added to the Seminary Hill Natural Area.
