Jan. 24, 2012 at 10:24am December jobless figures rise throughout South SoundUnemployment was higher throughout the South Sound during December, according to the latest data from the state Employment Security Department. The jobless rate in Pierce County rose from 8.8 percent during November to 9.1 percent last month. In Thurston County, the unemployment rate was 7.9 percent, compared to 7.5 percent in November. Lewis County reported a jobless rate of 13.3 percent, up from 12.2 percent and Mason County's rate rose from 9.7 percent during November to 10.6 percent last month. Statewide, unemployment fell from 8.7 percent during November to 8.5 percent in December.
