Grant money available for renewable energy feasibility studies

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is making $3 million available through the Rural Energy for America Program to conduct feasibility studies for renewable energy systems for agriculture producers and rural small businesses.

Eligible feasibility studies for renewable energy systems include projects that will produce energy from wind, solar, biomass, geothermal, hydro power and hydrogen-based sources.

Promotions, hires and recognitions in South Sound

Zella Kahn-Jetter Ph.D.has been named dean of the School of Engineering at St. Martin's University. She has more than 20 years of experience in Catholic higher education and currently serves as the chair of the Mechanical Engineering Department at Manhattan College, a private Catholic college in New York. Kahn-Jetter will assume her deanship in January.

Colleen H. Gillespie has been named chief advisory officer of Olympia-based Cambridge Wealth Management. She has a bachelor's degree in social work from Eastern Washington University and a dual master's degree in public administration/health administration from Portland State University.

Starting next spring, Pierce College will begin offering a new option for students wishing to pursue careers in health care.

The physical therapist assistant program targets students interested in receiving career training, while maintaining their family and work schedules.

WSDOT receives 21 applications for rail projects

The Washington State Department of Transportation is reviewing applications for $7.75 million in legislative funding available through grant and loan programs.

The freight rail assistance programs are intended to promote economic development and improve mobility by supporting and funding key projects and operations.

Employment Trends Index declines

The Conference Board Employment Trends Index decreased in August for the second time in the past four months. The index now stands at 96.7, down from July's revised figure of 97.4.

However, the index is up 9.4 percent from a year ago.

Home sales slip during August

Home sales declined during August throughout the South Sound, according to the latest numbers from the Northwest Multiple Listing Service.

"It is solidly a buyer's market," said NWMLS director OB Jacobi, general manager of Windermere Real Estate Company. "The market is good for sellers who price their homes correctly."

Economic outlook weakens significantly

The Washington Economic & Revenue Forecast Council's outlook is significantly weaker than it was during June. The economic recovery has "slowed to an agonizing crawl," according to the council's latest report.

The report says job growth remains anemic; housing is looking for a new bottom; and, despite some easing in credit conditions, small businesses continue to face a challenging credit environment. There is still considerable drag in the economy, little lift and increased uncertainty.

Nearly two-thirds of working Americans doubt they'll ever be able to retire

Most American workers are satisfied with their jobs, but nearly two in three have strong doubts about being able to eventually stop working and retire, according to a StrategyOne survey.

The vast majority of employed Americans who were surveyed describe themselves as satisfied with their jobs (82 percent) and report they get satisfaction from their work (80 percent). About three out of four (72 percent) also said they enjoy where they work and look forward to coming to work every day.

State launches natural resources Web portal

A recently launched online service is supposed to make it easier for people and businesses to find what they need from Washington's natural resources agencies.

"One Front Door to Washington's Outdoors" – a collaborative effort of the Governor's Natural Resources Cabinet and the state's "Access Washington" Web team – makes a range of information and services a click or two away for residents and visitors.

Tax incentives save businesses $236 million

Business & Occupation and sales tax incentives reduced state and local tax revenue by $236 million, according to the the Department of Revenue's annual "Descriptive Statistics for Tax Incentives" report.

Of this amount, $109.8 million is the sales tax deferral/exemption for high technology firms, $80.7 million stems from deferral/exemptions taken by rural manufacturers, and $23.8 million involves B&O tax credits taken by high technology firms.

UPS honored for neighborhood alliances

University of Puget Sound has received the 2010 Community Partnership Award from the Cross District Association of Tacoma for its work in partnership with small businesses and the contributions of students, faculty and staff to the local community.
           
UPS was recognized for its mutually beneficial working relationships with the Proctor and Sixth Avenue districts, for hosting the CDA's annual fundraising events and for its support in providing facilities for CDA executive committee meetings.

Jobless rate for construction industry falls slightly

The unemployment rate for the construction industry edged down to 17 percent in August compared to 17.3 percent a month earlier, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

In contrast, the nonresidential building construction sector lost 200 jobs last month and has lost 31,900 jobs, or 7.4 percent, over the past year. Nonresidential building construction employment now stands at 682,400 jobs.

Port of Tacoma ordered to restore wetlands

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has ordered the Port of Tacoma to restore wetlands destroyed by unauthorized work at two locations in the Commencement Bay area.

An EPA investigation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers uncovered the destroyed wetlands on property the port planned to develop. The damage occurred on the Hylebos Peninsula at the former Hylebos Marsh Wildlife Restoration Project site. The work was done without a Clean Water Act permit in violation of federal law.

Many developers in court

Several of the South Sound's most prominent real estate developers are spending more time in court than on construction, as banks and other lenders seek to resolve non-performing loans.

Hyun J. Um and Thomas A. Price, principals of Prium Inc. and related entities, both filed for personal bankruptcy protection Aug. 17 under provisions of Chapter 11, which contemplates reorganization of their finances. A number of their corporate units also are active as defendants within Pierce County Superior Court.

Dr. Patrick J. Halpin and Dr. Joseph P. Clabots have joined the board of directors of Puget Sound Health Partners. Halpin is an orthopedic surgeon and managing partner of Olympia Orthopaedic Associates. Clabots is a thoracic surgery specialist practicing in Lakewood.

Longtime chamber leader to retire

David Graybill, president and CEO of Tacoma Pierce County Chamber since September 1983, has announced his pending retirement.

The move came 27 years to the day of his hiring to lead the largest business organization in Pierce County. Graybill says he will stay in his post through Dec. 31, 2010, to assist the board of directors in finding his replacement.

Federal Way accepting applications for tourism enhancement grants

Nonprofit organizations that want to increase tourism and overnight stays in Federal Way can get a little financial help from the City of Federal Way.

Applications for the City's Tourism Enhancement Grant program are due Sept. 30. Applicants will be invited to a committee review in October and grants will be awarded by December.
