Promotions, hires and recognitions in South Sound

Zella Kahn-Jetter Ph.D.has been named dean of the School of Engineering at St. Martin's University. She has more than 20 years of experience in Catholic higher education and currently serves as the chair of the Mechanical Engineering Department at Manhattan College, a private Catholic college in New York. Kahn-Jetter will assume her deanship in January.

Colleen H. Gillespie has been named chief advisory officer of Olympia-based Cambridge Wealth Management. She has a bachelor's degree in social work from Eastern Washington University and a dual master's degree in public administration/health administration from Portland State University.

Pierce College launching online physical therapist assistant program

Starting next spring, Pierce College will begin offering a new option for students wishing to pursue careers in health care.

The physical therapist assistant program targets students interested in receiving career training, while maintaining their family and work schedules.

UPS honored for neighborhood alliances

University of Puget Sound has received the 2010 Community Partnership Award from the Cross District Association of Tacoma for its work in partnership with small businesses and the contributions of students, faculty and staff to the local community.
           
UPS was recognized for its mutually beneficial working relationships with the Proctor and Sixth Avenue districts, for hosting the CDA's annual fundraising events and for its support in providing facilities for CDA executive committee meetings.

St. Martin’s students develop way for pulp mills to save energy

Students from Saint Martin's University in Lacey have come up with an idea to slash energy usage within the paper- and pulp-drying industry.

Their research project involves a paper-dryer concept based exclusively on flat ceramic infrared electric emitters.

Bob Pearsall has been named head superintendent of Salish Cliffs Golf Club at Little Creek Casino Resort in Shelton. He previously was head superintendent at The Golf Club at Hawks Prairie in Lacey.

Wayne Horvitz will join the University of Puget Sound School of Music this fall as director of the jazz band and as an affiliate faculty member. He is a composer, pianist and keyboardist, and has performed or recorded with musicians including Billy Bang, Marty Ehrlich, Bill Frisell, Carla Bley, Robin Holcomb, Butch Morris, Bobby Previte, Michael Shrieve, Eddie Palmieri, John Zorn, Elliott Sharp, the World Saxophone Quartet, Human Feel and The Living Daylights.

Clover Park, Bates ink deal to broadcast student programs

A partnership between Clover Park and Bates technical colleges will provide Pierce County television viewers with more local programming options.

Beginning in September, viewers of Clover Park Technical College Television will be able to watch Bates student-produced programming on Comcast channel 28 every Friday. The agreement provides Bates access to county cable households for its student-produced programming for the first time in six years.

Pierce College seeking to develop center of veteran students

Pierce College has applied to the federal Department of Education for a three-year, $364,000 grant for the development of a Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success at Pierce College Fort Steilacoom.

This center would provide veteran students a designated space to gather and learn, a person to help with one-on-one attention, and services to help them be successful in higher education and transition into civilian life.

UW Tacoma, Evergreen top choices for veterans

The University of Washington Tacoma and The Evergreen State College are among the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools offering opportunities and support for military veterans, according to the Military Friendly Schools list released today by G.I. Jobs.

Schools on the list range from state universities and private colleges to community colleges and trade schools. The common bond is their shared priority of recruiting students with military experience.

The Evergreen State College among Princeton's best

The Evergreen State College is one of the country's best institutions for undergraduate education, according to The Princeton Review's  2011 annual college guide, "The Best 373 Colleges."

Only about 15 percent of America's 2,500 four-year colleges and two Canadian colleges are profiled in the book.

Joel Shabel has joined GVA Kidder Mathews' Tacoma brokerage division as an associate vice president. He previously worked for Colliers International, where he completed more than $40 million in commercial real estate transactions. Shabel specializes in office properties.

Shannon King-Wilson has joined John L. Scott Graham as managing broker. She has many years of business and real estate experience.

UW Tacoma opening Student Health Services facility

For the first time, when University of Washington Tacoma students get a sore throat, discover a weird rash, have questions about living with diabetes or sprain an ankle getting off the bus, they have a place on campus to go for help.
 
On Aug. 16, in partnership with Franciscan Medical Group, UW Tacoma is opening Student Health Services, a facility supported entirely by student fees. It will be staffed with an advanced registered nurse practitioner and a licensed practical nurse.

Central Washington University's College of Business has received accreditation from The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

More than 1,300 Pierce County residents help comprise CWU's nearly 11,000-member student body.

Highline Community College listed as a '2010 Great Colleges to Work For'

Highline Community College in Des Moines is one of the nation's best colleges to work for, according to a survey by The Chronicle of Higher Education.
 
Highline is also one of the 39 institutions selected for The Chronicle's Honor Roll, an honor that recognizes the top colleges and universities in their size categories – small, medium and large. Highline won in the medium-sized category.

Study: UW Tacoma's economic impact is $235 million

A study released at a recent UW Board of Regents meeting shows that the three-campus University of Washington has an annual economic impact of $9.1 billion in the state. The study measures the direct economic impact of the university's spending, plus additional indirect spending through businesses and individuals paid by UW who re-spent money within the state.

UW Tacoma's annual economic impact alone totals more than $235 million. That includes $102.2 million directly contributed to the state economy and an additional $132.8 million indirectly.

Students become honorary IRS special agents for a night

The University of Washington Tacoma's forensic accounting class was sworn in last night as honorary Internal Revenue Service special agents as part of an "Adrian Project" outreach event that took place on campus.

"I want them to see the inside of the organization and apply the concepts we've been talking about," said Len Heritage, Milgard School of Business lecturer. "An auditor is like a watchdog, but a forensic accountant is like a bulldog."

IRS special agents volunteered to help coordinate various scenarios for the students. Each team was expected to participate in a mock situation as if it were truly investigating a crime.

Saint Martin's forms new College of Education and Professional Psychology

Saint Martin's University's College of Education and its graduate program in professional counseling have been joined to form a new academic unit, the College of Education and Professional Psychology.

The move is part of a strategic reorganization of the academic units. Last month, the Lacey-based university announced that the undergraduate divisions of Social Sciences, Humanities and Science and Mathematics would be combined to form the new College of Arts and Sciences.

Pierce College military program ranked as one of nation’s most popular

Pierce College has been recognized by Military Times Edge magazine as one of the 50 Most Popular Colleges in its June/July issue.
 
The school ranked 14th based on where active-duty military use their tuition assistance benefits. The data used in the ranking was provided by the Air Force, Army, Army National Guard, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.

Promotions, hires and recognitions in South Sound

Clinton Griffee and Mike Scott have been honored as Educators of the Year by the Washington Association of Vocational Education. Both are instructors at Bates Technical College. Griffee teaches welding and Scott teaches broadcasting and video production.

Dick Bower building and fire safety director for the City of Gig Harbor has received the Washington State Building Official of the Year award. He was recognized for his dedication to safety and emergency management in Gig Harbor and throughout the state.

KVTI signing on with new format June 21

When Washington State University's Northwest Public Radio assumes management of Clover Park Technical College's radio station KVTI, 90.9 FM, on Monday, the format will shift from Contemporary Top 40 to classical and NPR News.

While WSU will operate the station, Clover Park will retain the license and ownership.
