Annual awards breakfast held
Harris-Rebar, a construction supply firm located on Tacoma Tideflats, was named Small Employer of the Year this morning by Tacoma Goodwill Industries. The honor is recognition for hiring five young adults from the agency's Youth Builds and other training programs, and it came during the agency's annual awards breakfast event at Greater Tacoma Convention & Trade Center.
The Army & Air Force Exchange Service, which operates retail stores and services on Fort Lewis and McChord Air Force Base to benefit the military's morale and welfare funds, was named Large Employer of the Year. A self-supporting operation with no federal tax support, AAFES has a long history of willingness to provide flexibility in hirings and workplace accommodations that benefit employment opportunities for people with disabilites.
Shasta Beverage, a national soft drink manufacturer with regional operations in Tukwila, was named Tacoma Goodwill Business Partner of the Year. It utilizes contract services provided by Goodwill workers to custom repackage cases for retail sales.
Goodwill clients and graduates Sharon Bryant, Stephanie Carlson and Cherie Cruz each received recognition for their individual accomplishments in the past year during the fund-raising event.
Terry A. Hayes, Goodwill CEO, announced that the group's board has given the go-ahead to begin construction on the new Work Opportunity Center, a $20 million facility to deliver job-training and placement services, in late June. Nearly 75 percent of the needed funding has been secured just three months after unveiling architectural drawings.
