Quality outcomes targeted in new health care reform pilot projects

The Washington State Health Care Authority has selected Group Health Cooperative as the lead organization for two Accountable Care Organization pilot projects to help transform the health care delivery system and improve health care quality for Washingtonians.

The ACO concept is a collaborative approach to individual and population health, where multiple, diverse provider groups take joint responsibility for the cost and quality of care delivered to their combined population of patients cared for by the groups' clinicians.

In July, the Massage Program entered into an agreed order with Aisha N. Viera. She was convicted of assault of a child. She must comply with terms and conditions set against her license.

Promotions, hires and recognitions in South Sound

Bob Pearsall has been named head superintendent of Salish Cliffs Golf Club at Little Creek Casino Resort in Shelton. He previously was head superintendent at The Golf Club at Hawks Prairie in Lacey.

Wayne Horvitz will join the University of Puget Sound School of Music this fall as director of the jazz band and as an affiliate faculty member. He is a composer, pianist and keyboardist, and has performed or recorded with musicians including Billy Bang, Marty Ehrlich, Bill Frisell, Carla Bley, Robin Holcomb, Butch Morris, Bobby Previte, Michael Shrieve, Eddie Palmieri, John Zorn, Elliott Sharp, the World Saxophone Quartet, Human Feel and The Living Daylights.

Providence seeking input from former patients to improve hospital policy

Providence Centralia or St. Peter hospitals are forming a Patient Advisory Council to allow patients and families to directly impact and influence the policies and practices that affect care and services.

Volunteers must be able to work at least two hours per month and commit to a two-year term.

Valley Cities losing CEO

Valley Cities Counseling and Consultation CEO Faith Richie is resigning to become vice president for national marketing and program development at Telecare Corp.
 
During her four years at Valley Cities, the organization has expanded sites and services, housing development and acquisition, and has had a 19 percent growth rate and low staff turnover.

St. Joseph Medical Center receives award for stroke care

St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association's Get with the Guidelines–Stroke Silver Performance Achievement Award.

The award recognizes the medical center's stroke-care program and its success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care.

Providence St. Peter Hospital adding 21-bed unit

Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia is moving ahead with construction of a 21-bed patient care unit.

Funding for the multi-million dollar project will come from a variety of sources, including Providence Health & Services, Washington-Montana Region, hospital operating budgets and philanthropic support from the Providence St. Peter Foundation.

Volunteers sought for hospital disaster drill

Providence Centralia Hospital is seeking volunteers age 14 and older to act as victims for a mass-victim decontamination drill Aug. 31.

The drill will simulate an accident involving a tanker containing hazardous materials and a bus with 30 adults and children.

Washington’s adult smoking rate now third lowest in the nation

New survey results show Washington's adult smoking rate has dropped to a new low of 14.8 percent. That's down from 15.3 percent the previous year.

Washington now has the third lowest smoking rate in the nation — the state's best ranking since measuring across all 50 states started in 1995.

Providence brings urology services to 
Lewis County

Providence Urology Centralia opened today, bringing urology services back to Lewis County for the first time since 2006. The new clinic is part of the Providence Physician Network.

Robert Hehn M.D. has joined the practice, which is in Suite K of the Providence Medical Plaza, 1800 Cooks Hill Road, Centralia.

Dr. Germaine R. Johnson has joined Medical Imaging Northwest/Diagnostic Imaging Northwest. His special interests include nuclear medicine, PET, diagnostic radiology and emergency radiology. Johnson is a member of the Radiologic Society of North America, Society of Nuclear Medicine and The Pierce County Medical Society.

Frank Elliott III, division manager for Geiger Northwest/Seattle & Tacoma,
has received the Division Of The Year award. He also was recognized for 45
years of service.

State awarded $1 million to increase transparency of health insurance rates

Washington has been awarded a $1 million federal grant to improve its review of health insurance rates and to increase transparency for the public.

The grant award—provided under the Affordable Care Act—must be used by states to improve the oversight of health insurance rates, take action against unreasonable rates and ensure that consumers receive value for their premium dollars.

Women’s Funding Alliance awards $357,500 in grants

Women's Funding Alliance has awarded $357,500 to 21 Washington organizations focused on providing political, economic and social opportunities for women and girls.

The grants, ranging from $2,000 to $25,000, bring the total community contribution of WFA to more than $5.5 million since the foundation's inception.

Joel Shabel has joined GVA Kidder Mathews' Tacoma brokerage division as an associate vice president. He previously worked for Colliers International, where he completed more than $40 million in commercial real estate transactions. Shabel specializes in office properties.

Shannon King-Wilson has joined John L. Scott Graham as managing broker. She has many years of business and real estate experience.

Adverse events, medical errors now available online

Information about adverse events and medical errors in Washington hospitals and facilities is now available online.

Under state law, hospitals and medical facilities are required to report 28 types of errors that are considered "serious reportable events" by the National Quality Forum.

UW Tacoma opening Student Health Services facility

For the first time, when University of Washington Tacoma students get a sore throat, discover a weird rash, have questions about living with diabetes or sprain an ankle getting off the bus, they have a place on campus to go for help.
 
On Aug. 16, in partnership with Franciscan Medical Group, UW Tacoma is opening Student Health Services, a facility supported entirely by student fees. It will be staffed with an advanced registered nurse practitioner and a licensed practical nurse.

Tacoma/Valley Radiation Oncology Centers recognized for 'excellence'

Tacoma/Valley Radiation Oncology Centers has been designated a Center of Excellence in accelerated partial breast irradiation for offering therapy with SAVITM breast brachytherapy.

SAVI is a new kind of radiation therapy which allows more women with early stage breast cancer to choose a faster course of radiation following lumpectomy surgery.
