Hotel occupancy improves, rates continue to fall

Hotel occupancy improved in most markets of the Pacific Northwest during June, but the average daily room rate maintained a downward trend, according to WRH Consulting's latest Trends in the Hotel Industry report.

Room occupancy for Tacoma and Pierce County was 77.2 percent, up from 70.3 percent a year earlier. For the first six months of 2010, the occupancy rate was 67.5 percent, compared to 66.6 percent for January through June 2009.
However, average daily room rates were off 6.8 percent this year compared to June 2009, falling from $108.97 to $101.57. The average for the first six months of 2010 was $98.24, compared to $104.20 during 2009.

Revenue per available room inched up in Tacoma and Pierce County during June, at $78.41 compared to $76.61 last year. For the first half of the year, RevPARwas $66.31, compared to $69.40 during 2009.
