Goodwill names top employers

Annual awards breakfast held

Harris-Rebar, a construction supply firm located on Tacoma Tideflats, was named Small Employer of the Year this morning by Tacoma Goodwill Industries. The honor is recognition for hiring five young adults from the agency's Youth Builds and other training programs, and it came during the agency's annual awards breakfast event at Greater Tacoma Convention & Trade Center.

The Army & Air Force Exchange Service, which operates retail stores and services on Fort Lewis and McChord Air Force Base to benefit the military's morale and welfare funds, was named Large Employer of the Year. A self-supporting operation with no federal tax support, AAFES has a long history of willingness to provide flexibility in hirings and workplace accommodations that benefit employment opportunities for people with disabilites.

Downtown Tacoma's impact growing

Researchers from a Texas consulting firm told members of the city council and concerned citizens in separate meetings Tuesday that downtown Tacoma's economic contribution to the whole city and surrounding Pierce County is vast --- and growing.

Olympia police nabs clinic burglar

Two separate burglary alarms from medical offices near Olympia's Lilly Road just after 10 p.m. Thursday night brought police officers to the neighborhood. While no intruder was found near some broken windows, there was enough suspicion that two officers stayed nearby.

Fire deals blow to Eagles, flood relief

The Chehalis Eagles Lodge building caught fire this morning and suffered significant damage, said Debbie Campbell, executive director of Lewis County's United Way.
