Jobs was mixed picture in August

Today's National Employment Report from Automatic Data Processing shows employment decreased by 33,000 in August. The report is based on actual payroll data and measures the change in total nonfarm private employment each month.

While small businesses added 20,000 jobs around the nation, large companies lost 28,000 and producers lost 78,000. Big employment boosts came in service jobs, with 45,000 new hires.

"Employment among small-size businesses, defined as those with fewer than 50 workers,  advanced 20,000 during August. Though this growth declined from last month's revised  increase of 46,000, these figures continue to offer evidence of the resiliency small-size  businesses have demonstrated over the past several years when compared to the job losses experienced at larger firms," said economist Joel Prakken.
