Promotions, hires and recognitions in South Sound

Dr. Patrick J. Halpin and Dr. Joseph P. Clabots have joined the board of directors of Puget Sound Health Partners. Halpin is an orthopedic surgeon and managing partner of Olympia Orthopaedic Associates. Clabots is a thoracic surgery specialist practicing in Lakewood.

David McDermott has joined Sound Credit Union as a financial advisor for CUSO Financial Services. He has more than 12 years of experience as a registered broker.

St. Martin’s students develop way for pulp mills to save energy

Students from Saint Martin's University in Lacey have come up with an idea to slash energy usage within the paper- and pulp-drying industry.

Their research project involves a paper-dryer concept based exclusively on flat ceramic infrared electric emitters.

Promotions, hires and recognitions in South Sound

John Blankenship has been hired as interim executive director of the Olympia-Lacey-Tumwater Visitor and Convention Bureau. He is the former executive director of Wolf Haven International in Tenino.

Tracie Cochran has joined the South Sound Washington Business Center as director and Linda Jadwin has been promoted to the chief operating officer. Cochran has a bachelor's degree in accounting and a master's degree in business administration, and she is currently working on her CPA license.

OLTVCB taps Blankenship as interim executive director


John Blankenship, former executive director of Wolf Haven International in Tenino, has been hired as interim executive director of the Olympia-Lacey-Tumwater Visitor and Convention Bureau.

The VCB is jointly funded by the cities of Olympia, Lacey and Tumwater and by its members and is governed by a volunteer board.

State seeking input about municipal stormwater permits

The Washington Department of Ecology will be gathering feedback during eight "listening sessions" across the state as its first step to update municipal stormwater permits.

The permits describe how cities, counties and other public entities must manage and prevent polluted stormwater runoff. They expire in 2012.

South Sound Bank increases assets, deposits during Q2

South Sound Bank is reporting that its assets and deposits for the second quarter of 2010 were up $7.5 million and nearly $2 million, respectively, compared to the same period last year. Net income dropped slightly, from $747,000 during Q2 2009 to $724,000 this year.

The bank, which has offices in Olympia and Lacey, said that during the last six months it has helped 25 local businesses to expand, start up or maintain operations by making more than $13 million in Small Business Administration-backed loans.

FDIC sale of Venture Bank assets now in progress

Bidding for the assets of the former Lacey-based Venture Bank that was recently closed by state regulators is now in progress in an online auction sale that is open to the public through tomorrow.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. conducts online sales of the assets of closed banks throughout the United States. The Venture Bank sale includes assets from 18 branches in King, Pierce, Thurston and Lewis counties. The auction includes 992 total lots of merchandise making this one of the larger FDIC auction sales to occur this year.

Saint Martin's forms new College of Education and Professional Psychology

Saint Martin's University's College of Education and its graduate program in professional counseling have been joined to form a new academic unit, the College of Education and Professional Psychology.

The move is part of a strategic reorganization of the academic units. Last month, the Lacey-based university announced that the undergraduate divisions of Social Sciences, Humanities and Science and Mathematics would be combined to form the new College of Arts and Sciences.

Lacey will continue Summer Lunch Program and Playground Pals

The City of Lacey Parks and Recreation Department's  "Save our Summer Food Service Program" campaign has met its goal of raising $12,000, so the program can continue uninterrupted and without a reduction in services.

Since 1993, the Parks and Recreation Department has sponsored the summer lunch program in partnership with North Thurston Public Schools to assist low-income families who meet the eligibility requirements for free or reduced school meals.

Lacey ordinance allows for bigger industrial facilities

The Lacey City Council passed last night an ordinance that modified the regulations applicable to the light industrial zoned districts of the city.

Perhaps most notably, the amendments changed the maximum size of a building's footprint on a 40 or more acre site from 200,000 square feet to 500,000 square feet.

LOTT changes name and logo

The LOTT Alliance has changed its name to LOTT Clean Water Alliance to better reflect the public services it provides for Lacey, Olympia, Tumwater and north Thurston County.

The organization also has developed a new graphic identity that includes four water drops in a pattern similar to the recycle symbol. This element symbolizes the four governments that form the partnership and also reflects LOTT's role in transforming waste into valuable resources, treating wastewater to produce reclaimed water, biosolids and methane.

Hearings set on Thurston County Comprehensive Plan

The Thurston County Board of County Commissioners will hold a public hearing on June 1 regarding proposed changes to the Thurston County Comprehensive Plan, and associated joint plans with the Cities of Lacey, Olympia and Yelm.  

Public hearings will also be held on amendments to the Thurston County development code and on the adoption of the Working Lands Strategic Plan.

Dr. Lorri Nichols, a Federal Way doctor of chiropractic, has been elected to serve as president-elect of the Washington State Chiropractic Association board of directors.  Nichols operates Northwest Chiropractic Center. She is a 1983 graduate of Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic and has been in practice for 27 years.

Karen W. Vincent has joined Morrison House Sotheby's International Realty. Vincent has more than three decades of domestic and international career experience.

Kathy Owen has received the 2010 Outstanding Professional Award for Teen Services from the Washington Recreation & Park Association. She is recreation supervisor for the Lacey Parks Department.
