Home sales slip during August

Home sales declined during August throughout the South Sound, according to the latest numbers from the Northwest Multiple Listing Service.

"It is solidly a buyer's market," said NWMLS director OB Jacobi, general manager of Windermere Real Estate Company. "The market is good for sellers who price their homes correctly."

Bob Pearsall has been named head superintendent of Salish Cliffs Golf Club at Little Creek Casino Resort in Shelton. He previously was head superintendent at The Golf Club at Hawks Prairie in Lacey.

Wayne Horvitz will join the University of Puget Sound School of Music this fall as director of the jazz band and as an affiliate faculty member. He is a composer, pianist and keyboardist, and has performed or recorded with musicians including Billy Bang, Marty Ehrlich, Bill Frisell, Carla Bley, Robin Holcomb, Butch Morris, Bobby Previte, Michael Shrieve, Eddie Palmieri, John Zorn, Elliott Sharp, the World Saxophone Quartet, Human Feel and The Living Daylights.

Newton has more than 15 years of marketing, fund development and management experience, in both corporate and non-profit sectors. She most recently worked for Mason County Literacy in Shelton.

Pilot project aims to better manage electricity grid

Mason County PUD No. 3 and the Bonneville Power Administration are partnering on a smart grid pilot project to help manage the electricity grid and use wind power more effectively.

The project addresses two fundamental bottlenecks in the power grid: congestion during times of high power use and the imbalance created when more wind-powered energy is being generated than is being used.

Housing activity mixed during July

Housing activity during July held few surprises for members of Northwest Multiple Listing Service, although some brokers wonder why more buyers aren't taking advantage of historic low interest rates.  

Overall, both pending sales and median prices on closed sales for the 21 counties in the Northwest MLS service area showed slight improvement from the previous month, according to the latest report from NWMLS.  However, the results for South Sound counties were mixed.

DeLisa Smith has joined Capital Medical Center as director of emergency services. She previously was emergency room director at Twin Cities Community Hospital in Pismo Beach, Calif. Smith received a bachelor's degree in nursing from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix.

Mason General receives grant to improve access to breast cancer care

The Puget Sound Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure has awarded a $58,100 grant to Mason General Hospital for community breast cancer education and patient support.

The grant will support the "Early Detection and Patient Navigation" project, an initiative that provides women in Mason County with breast cancer awareness, outreach and screening services.

DOL will help local jurisdictions with traffic offense refunds

The Department of Licensing will reimburse local governments for refunds made to drivers who paid fines for cell phone and texting violations and some other traffic offenses.

On June 30, DOL discovered that municipal court judges in several jurisdictions were dismissing cell phone and texting tickets because the Model Traffic Ordinance had not been updated to reflect these violations.

State Sen. Joe Zarelli, R-Ridgefield, has been selected by the Association of Washington Business to receive its 2010 Jim Matson Award. The award, voted on by AWB members who serve on its Governmental Affairs Council, recognizes a current or former state legislator who consistently supports issues important to Washington's employers and the state's competitiveness. Zarelli was singled out for his consistent leadership on fiscal matters, particularly his ardent calls for fiscal restraint and a resetting of state budget priorities in the face of continued deficits and reliance on federal bailouts.

Mason PUD 3 sells bonds for capital projects, refinancing of debt

Mason County PUD No. 3 has sold $59.8 million in bonds to pay for construction of its Johns Prairie operations center, a number of important electrical system improvements and refinancing of a portion of existing debt at lower interest rates.

Mason General among nation's 'most wired' hospitals

Mason General Hospital has again been included among hospitals recognized by the American Hospital Association's  Journal's  "2010 Most Wired Survey."

Hospitals & Health Networks conducts the voluntary Most Wired Survey annually. The award is based on the facility's level of achievement in business and administrative management, clinical quality and safety, care continuum, and infrastructure.

Rural firefighters receive assistance grants

Seventy rural fire protection districts and fire department agencies have been awarded a total of $152,597 in Volunteer Fire Assistance grants to purchase personal protective clothing, fire shelters and basic fire suppression tools.

The money was provided by the U.S. Forest Service and administered by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources.

S&P upgrades Mason County PUD No. 3 bond rating

Standard & Poor's has upgraded the bond rating of Mason county PUD No. 3 from A- to A+.

The two-level upgrade, along with a previous improvement in bond ratings from Moody's Investor Service, is expected to save PUD 3 nearly $1 million in finance costs over the 30-year term of a bond sale this summer.

Taxable retail sales decline 2.9 percent during Q1

Overall taxable retail sales in Washington declined 2.9 percent to $22.6 billion during the first quarter of 2010, the Department of Revenue reported today.

Retail trade increased 1.9 percent to $10.2 billion compared to the first quarter of 2009. Retail trade is a subset of all taxable retail sales that includes retailers but excludes other industries such as services and construction.

Housing activity remains sluggish

Not even the lowest interest rates in decades could entice wary house-hunters last month. Home sales in western and central Washington remained sluggish with pending sales lagging year-ago levels, but not all the numbers were down.

June's pending sales outgained the total for May by 5.8 percent, according to the Northwest Multiple Listing Service. Closed sales were up from both a year ago and the previous month.
