Mobile meat testers now on the road

Washington State University Extension officials hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to launch of the USDA Mobile Meat Processing Trailer, which will bring USDA certified slaughter services to small and midsized farms throughout Pierce, Lewis, Thurston, Mason, King and Kitsap counties.
"The launch of this project is a great breakthrough for consumers looking for humane and sustainable farm products," said Sarah Garitone, Agriculture Assistance program coordinator for the Pierce County Conservation District. "The service will not only help farmers retain quality control and profitability, it will improve food safety and keep consumer dollars circulating within the regional economy."

The Pierce Conservation District funded construction of the Mobile Meat Processing Unit to make it possible for USDA certified inspections to take place in the South Sound region. The Puget Sound Meat Producers Cooperative, a non-profit cooperative of local ranchers, farmers, butchers, restaurant owners and consumers, was recently awarded a contract to operate the mobile service.
