State takes action on health workers

The Washington State Department of Health has revoked or suspended the licenses, certifications, or registrations of multiple health care providers within the state. The department has also immediately suspended the credentials of providers who have been prohibited from practicing in other states.

Washington joins suit against EPA

Washington has joined 12 other states, the District of Columbia, and the City of New York in a suit against the federal Environmental Protection Agency for failing to adopt regulations to control oil refinery emissions that contribute to global warming. The suit alleges that the EPA's refusal to require new or renovated oil refineries to install technologies that control pollution violates the federal Clean Air Act.

Colleges partner for Business Academy

Young people who have dropped out of high school can have another chance to complete their degree and increase their career prospects through a new joint by Bates Technical College, Tacoma Public Schools, and Communities in Schools of Tacoma. The three organizations have created the Tacoma Business Academy for young adults ages 16 to 21 who are no longer in school. The academy will begin this September.

Blog Watch: Small world

Thurston blogger Ken Balsley notes just how small the world is getting these days by writing about his recent trip to Los Angeles for an International Rotary Conference. Rotarians from around the world gathered to chat. Balsley was doing just that with an English chap who actually knew where Lacey was on a globe.

"Of course I do," he replied. "That's the home town of Kasey Keller. You've even named a street after him," Balsley wrote that the young man said.

Chehalis bridge replacement to begin

The Washington State Department of Transportation announced a project to build a new bridge over the South Fork of the Chehalis River on State Route 6 will begin Aug. 25. The contract was awarded to Scarsella Bros., Inc. of Seattle, which submitted a bid of $7,854,340.30. This project is funded through the 2005 Transportation Partnership Account.

Lacey's growing Hawks Prairie commercial center is set to be the site of the second Best Western in Thurston County. The Tumwater location opened in 1993. A downtown Olympia Best Western changed its affiliation to Clarion Hotel two years ago.

Historic Tacoma works to salvage materials from demolition

Historic Tacoma coordinated an effort  last week to salvage parts of a 1916 bungalow slated for demolition on Tacoma's Hilltop. The block is being cleared to make way for a surface parking lot near Tacoma's St. Joseph Hospital. The initial work consisted of removing interior doors, trim, cabinets and lighting hardware.

Free parking Tacoma could go away

For the first time in decades, downtown Tacoma visitors next year might have to pay for street parking. It's a plan that some downtown advocates say might make more parking available for customers of downtown merchants and businesses alike. A similar system of paid street parking is in place in Olympia.

Henry Gottfriedson, 61, and Alison Gottfriedson, 56, owners of Frank's Landing Indian Discount Tobacco, have reportedly pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Tacoma to conspiring to traffic in contraband cigarettes and structuring currency transactions in connection with a scheme to sell contraband cigarettes to the public without paying state taxes.

Laura MacNeil, a 17-year financial services veteran, has been named regional vice president of the Tacoma Regional Commercial Banking Office.  John Rindlaub, Chief Executive Officer for Wells Fargo's Pacific Northwest region, made the announcement. The office provides financial services to companies with annual revenue of $25 million and greater, including credit, treasury management, 401(k), equipment leasing and international/foreign exchange services. MacNeil will oversee 17 team members in Tacoma. She most recently worked as the loan team manager for Wells Fargo's Seattle office, where she managed a credit portfolio, supported business development, made hiring decisions and managed a team of seven.

Jessica Shattuck has been promoted to clinic manager at Apple Physical Therapy's downtown Puyallup clinic. Shattuck attended Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, earning a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences in 2003 and a Masters in Physical Therapy in 2004. She has a special interest in treating patients with sports related injuries and patients who are post-surgical. For the past two years, she has attended the Drayer Institute National Sports Medicine Conference, and has completed advanced courses on treating knees and shoulders.  Shattuck is active with local high school sports programs, providing on-field athletic training services during games for Puyallup, Emerald Ridge and Rogers High Schools.

College center remodel underway

Work is now underway on the $5 million remodel of the Centralia College Health and Wellness Center, which includes the gymnasium. The major remodel is expected to conclude by the end of the calendar year and will add 5,000-square-feet of classroom, exercise, lab, and office space, plus greatly improve the building's heating and ventilating systems.
