Olympia projects get green light

Olympia officials have announced approval of three major development projects that City Council members hope will provide a boost to the city's struggling downtown economy. Voted into being are: a new Hands on Children's Museum; a public plaza to be located next to the museum in the heart of the new East Bay neighborhood; and Olympia's new City Hall, which will be built on the former downtown Safeway site at 609 E. Fourth Ave.

Gallery owner Richenda Richardson said she considers the trio of projects a good portent for downtown businesses. She has been at the helm of Childhood's End Gallery on Fourth Avenue since 1971, and has seen it all on Olympia's downtown main drag – earthquakes, protests, and the development of the Fourth Avenue Bridge are among obstacles she has overcome in her 38 years doing business downtown. Though she acknowledges the potential construction impacts, Richardson is convinced that these mega-projects will help breathe new life into downtown.

"Any kind of development that will be good for the community will be good for business," said Richardson. "We need to bring more people downtown so they can see how much diversity we have, and that our businesses are locally owned."

CHECK THIS OUT TACOMA RESIDENTS - Straight from the New Takhoman.

OUR FAMED COUNCILWOMAN SENT A NASTY GRAM TO A TACOMA VOTER.... DID CITIZEN R.R. DESERVE THIS KIND OF ABUSIVE TALK IN AN EMAIL? READ AND DECIDE - Unbelievable she is our elected official - YOU SHOULD RESIGN YOU'RE DISGRACE TO TACOMA...

“Hi Julie,

If city planners want to reduce traffic accidents at intersections, the best practice is to make the yellow last longer and insert a pause between the red signal on one side and the green on the other.
This was the finding of a scientific study reported by Scientific American as well.

I can imagine the science presented by the traffic camera sales people was quite different.

Just passing along interesting information as it passes through my tube of internets.”

"Twenty-two minutes into last Tuesday’s City Council meeting Anderson responded to R.R. from the podium using her city issued laptop with the following nasty gram in pretty blue ink."

“You're assuming that we shortened the yellow light cycle. WRONG. You're assuming that revenue is our primary motivation. WRONG.

In FACT, while the installation of red light cameras do (sic) increase accidents (lower-risk fender benders), they also substantially REDUCE the sort of accidents that maim, kill and disable people (running red lights at high speeds).

We thoroughly researched all of the aspects of your e-mail, many of us making the same assumptions that you did.

I am confident that Tacoma's red light cameras REDUCE HARM.

Revenue is a secondary concern. Safety is first.

Assemble your FACTS before you publish your ACCUSATIONS. Or, at least feign curiosity and ask some questions first.

Oh…I see. You were submitting this piece of alarmism to the "Takhoman." Facts aren't necessary.

Julie”
