Heritage Bank selected among best places to work

Heritage Bank has been selected as the Bronze Award winner in the Large Business Category of Washington's Best Workplaces by Puget Sound Business Journal.

Finalists were chosen in five categories: Small Business, Medium Business, Large Business, Extra Large Business and Nonprofit Organization.

Heritage Bank has been in business for more than 80 years and is a part of Olympia-based Heritage Financial Corp., which also operates Central Valley Bank.

State revokes Olympia CPA's credentials

The Washington State Board of Accountancy has revoked Lance M. Avery's Certified Public Accounting certificate and eligibility to renew his license to practice as a CPA.

The board said the decision was based on his failure to complete client engagements or return their records, a felony judgment and sentencing of unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and assault in the third degree, and failure to respond to the board's inquiry.

Providence St. Peter Hospital adding 21-bed unit

Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia is moving ahead with construction of a 21-bed patient care unit.

Funding for the multi-million dollar project will come from a variety of sources, including Providence Health & Services, Washington-Montana Region, hospital operating budgets and philanthropic support from the Providence St. Peter Foundation.

John Blankenship has been hired as interim executive director of the Olympia-Lacey-Tumwater Visitor and Convention Bureau. He is the former executive director of Wolf Haven International in Tenino.

Tracie Cochran has joined the South Sound Washington Business Center as director and Linda Jadwin has been promoted to the chief operating officer. Cochran has a bachelor's degree in accounting and a master's degree in business administration, and she is currently working on her CPA license.

Home values decline in Tacoma, tick up in Olympia

Home values in the South Sound were mixed during the second quarter of 2010, according to the latest Zillow Home Value Index.

For June, the HVI for Tacoma was $186,900, off 1.7 percent on a quarterly basis and 7 percent lower year-over-year. The HVI was off 23.4 percent from its high of $244,000 during June 2007.

MBK Senior Living acquires Firs retirement community

MBK Senior Living has purchased The Firs retirement community in Olympia. 

The Firs is the California-based company's third senior living community in Washington. It also owns Harbor Crest and NorthPointe in Spokane.

OLTVCB taps Blankenship as interim executive director


John Blankenship, former executive director of Wolf Haven International in Tenino, has been hired as interim executive director of the Olympia-Lacey-Tumwater Visitor and Convention Bureau.

The VCB is jointly funded by the cities of Olympia, Lacey and Tumwater and by its members and is governed by a volunteer board.

Heritage Financial posts earnings, acquires Cowlitz

Heritage Financial Corp. reported net income for the quarter ended June 30 of $855,000 compared to net income of $91,000 for the quarter ended June 30, 2009.

Including preferred stock dividends, the net income applicable to common shareholders for the quarter was $523,000, or 5 cents per diluted common share, compared with a net loss applicable to common shareholders of $239,000, or 4 cents per diluted common share for the quarter ended June 30, 2009.

South Sound unemployment rate falls

Unemployment rates fell during June across the South Sound, according to the latest numbers from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The unemployment rate last month for Tacoma was 9 percent, down from 9.7 percent both during May and a year earlier. In Olympia, the unemployment rates was 7.3 percent during June, down from 7.8 percent a month earlier and 7.9 percent in June 2009.

Washington Business Bank's income declines sharply

Washington Business Bank posted a net income of $41,725 for the quarter ended June 30, a substantial decline from net income of $118,743 during the first quarter of 2010.

The bank also reported that deposits grew 14.3 percent compared to the end of 2009, but loans declined 3.85 percent for the same period.

South Sound Bank increases assets, deposits during Q2

South Sound Bank is reporting that its assets and deposits for the second quarter of 2010 were up $7.5 million and nearly $2 million, respectively, compared to the same period last year. Net income dropped slightly, from $747,000 during Q2 2009 to $724,000 this year.

The bank, which has offices in Olympia and Lacey, said that during the last six months it has helped 25 local businesses to expand, start up or maintain operations by making more than $13 million in Small Business Administration-backed loans.
