Mason tops South Sound housing market during January

Mason County led the South Sound housing market during January, posting increases in both sales and median prices compared to a year earlier, according to the latest data from Northwest Multiple Listing Service.

Home sales in Mason County increased from 34 during January 2011 to 40 last month. The median price rose 3.99 percent, from $154,250 to $160,400.

Disaster assistance available for small businesses

Small, nonfarm businesses in 35 Washington counties and eight neighboring Oregon counties, are now eligible to apply for low-interest disaster loans from the U. S. Small Business Administration.  

"These loans offset economic losses because of reduced revenue caused by the combined effects of excessive rain, flooding, below normal temperatures, high winds, frosts and freezes occurring Jan. 1 through July, 31, 2011," said Alfred E. Judd, director of SBA's Disaster Field Operations Center – West.

Access Information Management acquires Washington Archives Management

Access Information Management has purchased Washington Archives Management. Prior to the acquisition, Fife-based WAM was the largest, independent records and information management provider in the Seattle/Tacoma area.

"This acquisition of Washington Archives Management from Mark and Bill Naubert represents the largest in Access history and extends our service coverage to include nine U.S. states," said Rob Alston, CEO of Access Information Management.

Valley Community Bancshares posts Q4 earnings increase

Valley Community Bancshares, Inc., parent company of Valley Bank, reported earnings to $2.15 million, or $1.90 per share, for the year ended December 31, 2011, up slightly compared to $2.07 million, or $1.82 per share, during the previous year.
 
The company's Board of Directors also has approved a $1 per share cash dividend to shareholders of record on Dec. 31, 2011. The dividend represents the 38th consecutive year of payment.

State takes action against health care providers

The Washington State Department of Health has revoked or suspended the licenses, certifications or registrations of the following South Sound health care providers.

Mason County

In December, the Chemical Dependency Professional Program indefinitely suspended the credential of Steven Michael Dorland. Dorland failed to comply with a previous agreement.

Airport Advisory Commission has vacancy

The Thun Field Advisory Commission is seeking applicants to fill one position to represent South Hill residents. The commission meets bi-monthly to review issues related to the Pierce County Thun Field airport and other properties within 1,000 feet of the airport.

The unpaid positions require applicants to be current South Hill residents. The term expires April 12, 2016.

McGovern among Harlequin award recipients

Sprinker’s new ice rink opens Saturday

After an eight-month renovation, Pierce County will open the new ice rink at Sprinker Recreation Center on Saturday. The $6.5 million project included a new roof, a new rink and refrigeration equipment for the 35-year-old facility in Spanaway.

The ice rink portion of the building had been threatened with closure in 2010 because of structural concerns, but county officials found a way to address critical needs with existing funding.

In December, the Nursing Assistant Program denied the application of registered nursing assistant applicant Lisa J. Sipe. She was convicted of child molestation.

December jobless figures rise throughout South Sound

Unemployment was higher throughout the South Sound during December, according to the latest data from the state Employment Security Department.

The jobless rate in Pierce County rose from 8.8 percent during November to 9.1 percent last month.
