Politicians promote local cherries

Lt. Gov. Brad Owen and Mark Zirkle, owner of Rainier Fruit Co. were among the guests and speakers yesterday as the Lacey Wal-Mart celebrated the arrival of  locally grown cherries to store shelves.

Each year, Washington growers produce roughly 60 percent of the U.S. cherry crop, resulting in some 10 million boxes this year. Each standard box weighs 20 pounds.  The Washington cherry industry has a value of $600 million and provides more than 40,000 jobs during the summer season.
