Dec. 8, 2009 at 11:33am Procession, memorial impact local areaUPDATE: WSDOT announced that all lanes and ramps at SR 512 and I-5 are open to traffic. Westbound SR 512 left turns are open to South Tacoma Way. Those commuting home from work in the Tacoma and Lakewood area today may encounter slowdowns due to the memorial for slain Lakewood Police Sgt. Mark Renninger, and Officers Ronald Owens, Tina Griswold and Greg Richards being held at Tacoma Dome. More bystanders showed for the procession this morning than planners had anticipated, as residents wanted to show their respect and appreciation to the victims' families and law enforcement personnel. Many businesses, chambers and individuals have come up with unique ways to raise money for the fallen officers' families, while others have contributed to today's event. For example, to share in the preparation for today's memorial service, Bates culinary arts students volunteered to prepare and serve a light breakfast for more than 600 memorial service volunteers before the event. After the service, they will serve hors d'oeuvres to 400 attendees at a reception for Lakewood Police Department families. With the help of the Lakewood Rotary, Costco provided the college with a $2,500 donation of food for the breakfast. Roger Knapp, Bates' culinary arts instructor, who will supervise the student volunteers, also secured food donations from Sysco, U.S. Foodservice and Food Services of America for the reception.
