Oct. 5, 2009 at 12:46pm Around the SoundBusiness events in the South SoundThe City of Orting will conduct a lahar drill exercise Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday of this week. This year, in an effort to achieve greater authenticity and facilitate safer outcomes, the exact time of the drill will be unannounced. This will include the use of the three outdoor sirens. Drills are conducted every year to responsibly prepare for sudden emergencies precipitated by volcanic events or other similar natural disasters. As in the past, this drill will be conducted in close coordination with the Orting School District. If people have specific questions about emergency procedures they can call (360) 893-3111. The Kent Chamber will host Business Expo from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7 at ShoWare Center. The event is free and open to the public. Community Based Services continues to expand the area covered on Tacoma's Eastside and South End. Be sure to mark Wednesday, Oct. 7, as the official kickoff for the Community Based Services program expansion into the neighborhoods between South 64th St. to the southern city limits between Sheridan and McKinley neighborhoods. It will also include the area between Interstate 5 and Sheridan from South 84th to 96th streets. The meeting will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. at Fern Hill Elementary School, 80442 S. Park Ave. City Center Luncheon will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 9 at the Pacific Grill Events Center.
