Tacoma drivers: Know before you go this weekend

The Washington State Department of Transportation is planning a busy weekend of construction in Pierce County. Scheduled construction work is weather-dependent and crews are closely monitoring forecasts.

Crews are shifting southbound Interstate 5 traffic in Fife onto a recently widened segment of median. Striping and barrier removal reduces southbound I-5 to a single lane beginning at West Hylebos Creek Bridge overnight Saturday.
Crews will close two lanes of southbound I-5 beginning at 8 p.m. and will close three lanes by 11 p.m. Crews begin reopening lanes at 8 a.m. All lanes will reopen between West Hylebos Creek Bridge and Port of Tacoma Road by 10 a.m. Sunday.

Girder setting for a bridge repair project closes both directions SR 509, between I-705 and Port of Tacoma Road, from 3 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, March 13. A signed detour will reroute drivers to I-705, I-5 and Port of Tacoma Road during the closure.

Crews postponed the westbound SR 16 traffic shift and Sprague Avenue ramp closure scheduled for this weekend, and will attempt to do the work overnight Saturday. Weather prevented crews from completing necessary prep work to shift traffic this weekend.

WSDOT provides several tools to help drivers plan ahead:
  • Check WSDOT's Web site for real-time travel information.
  • Call 5-1-1 for traffic updates.
  • Tune to highway advisory radio and watch electronic highway signs for information.
