Sep. 2, 2010 at 11:25am Longtime chamber leader to retireDavid Graybill, president and CEO of Tacoma Pierce County Chamber since September 1983, has announced his pending retirement. The move came 27 years to the day of his hiring to lead the largest business organization in Pierce County. Graybill says he will stay in his post through Dec. 31, 2010, to assist the board of directors in finding his replacement. If approved by Congress, the Korean agreement would be the first U.S. free trade agreement with a major Asian economy and the largest trade deal since the 1993 North American Free Trade Agreement. Aug. 27, 2010 at 10:50am HOV work closes I-5 lanes and ramps in Pierce County this weekendMotorists whose weekend plans include travel on Interstate 5 Saturday or Sunday nights from Portland Avenue to the Pierce/King County line can expect delays while the Washington State Department of Transportation works on two HOV projects. On Saturday, crews will close three lanes of northbound I-5 from Yakima Avenue to SR 167 (mileposts 133 to 135) and the off-ramp from northbound I-5 to SR 167. The project will build a commuter rail line from East D to South M Streets in Tacoma. Work on the project is expected to begin in late September. Aug. 26, 2010 at 12:20pm Museum of Glass receives highest level of accreditationMuseum of Glass has achieved accreditation from the American Association of Museums, the highest national recognition for a museum. Of the nation's estimated 17,500 museums, 775 are accredited, including 319 art museums. Museum of Glass is one of only 14 museums accredited in Washington and joins Tacoma Art Museum and Washington State History Museum to form a trio of accredited museums in Tacoma. He previously was head superintendent at The Golf Club at Hawks Prairie in Lacey. Wayne Horvitz will join the University of Puget Sound School of Music this fall as director of the jazz band and as an affiliate faculty member. He is a composer, pianist and keyboardist, and has performed or recorded with musicians including Billy Bang, Marty Ehrlich, Bill Frisell, Carla Bley, Robin Holcomb, Butch Morris, Bobby Previte, Michael Shrieve, Eddie Palmieri, John Zorn, Elliott Sharp, the World Saxophone Quartet, Human Feel and The Living Daylights. Aug. 20, 2010 at 9:38am HOV environmental mitigation project begins in TacomaThe Washington State Department of Transportation has begun construction on a wetland site off SR 167, mitigating the potential impacts of future high-occupancy vehicle construction projects in Tacoma. The $1.5 million project is being funded by the 2005 Transportation Partnership Ac and will include a 10-acre wetland mitigation site near 31st Avenue Court East. Aug. 19, 2010 at 1:33pm Port of Tacoma settles EPA paperwork dispute for $137,000The Port of Tacoma has agreed to pay $137,000 to settle a dispute with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency over paperwork related to the former Kaiser Aluminum smelter site. The dispute focused on a half-acre former waste-handling area cleaned up by Kaiser in 2002 before the port purchased the Tacoma Tideflats property.
