Dec. 4, 2008 at 12:54pm UWT announces seamanship courseSeasoned mariners and recreational boaters alike will receive world-class training in a course offered by the UW Tacoma Continuing Education program. Capt. Skip Anderson, lead instructor for the course, said it's designed to give boaters the peace of mind that comes with knowing they are well prepared. As added incentive, he noted that industry professionals look for licensed graduates of these courses for prospective employees. The course covers advanced ship-handling techniques, deck seamanship skills, basic towing techniques, fundamentals of ship stability and construction and other topics. This U.S. Coast Guard-approved course may be taken up to one year after issuance of an Operator of Un-inspected Passenger Vehicle license. Anderson is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and served 24 years in the U.S. Navy. He works as a tugboat skipper and sailing charter skipper, and is a founder of the Tacoma Tall Ships Society and president of the Tacoma Waterfront Association.
